The New York Times
Opinion Op-Ed Contributor By PIERRE ENGLEBERT Published: June 11, 2010 Claremont, Calif. THE World Cup, which began on Friday, is bringing deserved appreciation of South Africa as a nation that transitioned from white minority domination to a vibrant pluralist democracy. Yet its achievements stand largely alone on the continent. Of the 17 African nations that are commemorating their 50th anniversaries of independence this year—the Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia will both do so in the coming weeks—few have anything to truly celebrate.
![]() Views of North Korea show how a policy spread miseryThu, 2010-06-10 06:12The New York Times YANJI, China — Like many North Koreans, the construction worker lived in penury. His state employer had not paid him for so long that he had forgotten his salary. Indeed, he paid his boss to be listed as a dummy worker so that he could leave his work site. Then he and his wife could scrape out a living selling small bags of detergent on the black market.
![]() The Neanderthal genomeSat, 2010-06-05 09:41Only recently has it become possible to sequence Neanderthal genes. Scientists were able to obtain DNA from the remains of three Neanderthal women and sequence it. They then proceeded to compare the Neanderthal genome with five different modern people and have arrived at evidence of genetic influences on us. We now have evidence for some gene flow from Neanderthals to all non-Africans. The most surprising part is that these same genes were not only found in a European, but also in a Han Chinese and a person from Papua, New Guinea.
![]() KCAA English Language Proficiency TestFri, 2010-04-30 15:12(KCAA = Kenya Civil Aviation Authority) I took the test today and thought I should let other testees know what to expect. Similar descriptions are already making the rounds in emails and on paper, so it is in the interest of fairness to show one publicly.
