Super Auswahl heute

Heute kommt mir Hannas Musik-Auswahl ganz besonders gut vor. Jedenfalls trifft sie meinen Geschmack.

Hi Hanna!
Thank goodness for this blog, my computer is giving me trouble. I could hardly hear your show yesterday. It kept stopping and switching to other music. Now I can listen to it and hear the song I requested, which Birgit said was real fast. I don't know it, so I'm curious!

Welches Programm?

Sat, 2008-11-15 09:23 by Hans-Georg

Vielleicht können wir dieses Problem lösen. Hast du Windows XP? Welches Programm benutzt du, um die Musik zu hören? Wenn du auf den Link klickst, dann geht ja irgendein Programm auf und spielt die Musik ab. Welches ist das?

Death to iTunes

Thu, 2008-11-20 19:46 by Hans-Georg

In week 8 2008-11-13 I find two titles particularly fascinating:

25:12-29:58 "… The Needle"?
29:58-34:07 "Little Sparrow"

Hanna, is it OK that I've attached the other recordings as well and appended "Recordings" to the title? The newer ones are all gently edited to remove over-long pauses with total silence. They are now also digital recordings, i.e. they contain the unaltered data stream.

Is week 5 really week 5 or is it week 4 and week 5 is missing? The show wasn't on in that one week before week 6. Well, I guess this doesn't matter all too much.

And yet another question: would it be OK to shift this article into an open forum, so everybody can see and listen to it? It is technically difficult to shift it into a blog, but it is easy to shift it from one forum to another, for example from this closed forum into an open one.

yes to the shift

Yes, I'm fine with you shifting this to an open column so more people can listen if they want. I have to sort through when the recordings started still.

I've moved this discussion thread to the "Open forum". Now you can give the URL to everybody, if you like.

As to the week numbering, I think you can either count the calendar weeks, so this week would be week 11, or only the weeks when you did the show, so this week would be week 10. I think the latter is better, but it doesn't really matter much. I also forgot or never knew how the initial shows were counted. There was another one missing early on, so the question has already been answered, and I just don't know the answer.

Guess who's having dinner with us tonight. (:-)

Toll, jetzt kann ich Woche 7 hoeren!!

Ich war am vergangenen Donnerstag nicht zu Hause und konnte nicht zuhoeren. Jetzt kann ich das nachholen. Danke, Hanna!!

Nice show! :)

Nice show! :)

It's taking a little to get used to Bluegrass, but this is doing the job. It's usually already playing in the living room when I come home on thursdays.

I think my difficulty was how I usually listen to music. I used to say that good music always lives off contrast, maybe even complexity. So a lot of my stuff is the type that can easily give you a headache and draws a lot of attention. :P But in the end, I wouldn't want to have it playing when returning home after a long day in University. The radio show works just fine for that job. It's nice, relaxing music.

BTW, I didn't even know what Bluegrass is before you started doing this. *ducks*

So thanks again for the show. :)

Klingt wirklich viel besser jetzt. Der alte Sound war etwas nervig.

...............weiter so Gruß Daniel

I'm relieved, as my recording didn't work well this time. And I liked your music choices. (:-) Also there was no more hiss—the sound quality was much better. How did you do that?

By the way, if you want to let others download your recording, the Michna forum here is not the best place, because it's the only place where non-Michna-relatives cannot see it. Somebody entering will get a "403 Access denied" error. I believe a direct link to the file would still work, but if you want to post it openly, why not put it in your personal blog? If you do that, you can delete your article above to remove the duplication.

You'd have to upload it again though. Did it take long? I guess you have a fast line at KDIC. If not, please let me know, and I can try to do a bit of open surgery to move the file on the server. In that case you'd have to leave this article in place until I'm done.

I put it up on webspace I

I put it up on webspace I have at Grinnell: to share with people at Grinnell. When I have time, I wanted to make a little website for the show, just to practice web design, and because it would be nice to put up tracklistings and stuff.

I also didn't change anything in terms of technology, but I guess someone in charge figured it out.

A few points

Sat, 2008-11-01 08:43 by Hans-Georg

  • I cut the beginning. There was a rest of the previous transmission. I also removed the long pause before the first title. If you want to put the streamlined file up at Grinnell, you can download it here.

I have some nifty software here that can cut MP3 files without recompressing them and therefore without any quality loss. If you like, I can cut your next file before you upload it to Grinnell. Just upload it here first and let me quickly do the cutting.

  • Now just theoretical, but I've pondered the copyright issue a little more, because I just asked Daniel not to put up music rips publicly on this site. Then I proposed that you do it. But my take is that the situation is different. His were clean, high-quality CD rips, while yours was a low-data-rate recording of your own transmission which had been aired before. Of course in today's situation nobody can tell what's legal and what isn't, so we just do what we think is agreeable. Do you know anything about the legality in relation to copyright of KDIC transmissions? I guess, if the station has been online and on the air for a long time without anybody ever complaining about copyright breaches, then KDIC may have gained some kind of common law justification. But what do I know?
  • If you ever want some permanent web space, which survives your time at Grinnell, just ask. There's room on our server. If you tell me, you'll have it the moment I read your request. (:-) If you don't have a domain, you can get a subdomain on any of mine, like or I can also install a Content Management System, such as WordPress or Drupal (like this one here), for you.

replies to questions

Ah! Sorry for the long delay in writing on here, and thanks for continuing to add the shows.

I would love to have web space on your server. I do not have a domain, so would be my preference. I do not think, at this time, that I need a content management system (I've never used one, though, so if you have any recommendations let me know).

The web stream is all legal-- we have to log the songs we play, but I do now know anything about the legality of saving and uploading the transmissions after the fact, but, well, since it's all really low quality I don't think it's that big of a deal.
